GHS Math Team – 2021-22 Year in Review
In just our second year, the Granville High School’s Math Team had some great results in 21-22 as we consistently went head-to-head against larger public schools and elite private schools, and in many cases, won!
Highlights
OCTM Contest
Two OHMIO Qualifiers, Member of National Champs Ohio ARML Team
The GHS Math Team had Luke H. and Andrew H. both finish in the top 100 in the state, enabling them to qualify for the prestigious OHMIO (Ohio HS Math Invitational Olympiad) contest held on November 6, 2021 at Capital University. Luke H. won 3rd in Ciphering and 5th Overall.
Luke H. went on to participate in the Ohio ARML Team and was a valuable member of the team that won 1st place in the Off-Site Division B bracket (29 teams) in ARML 2022 by 1 point over the Connecticut team. National Champs (Off-site Division B)! (Results Summary, Complete Results)
AMC 10/12
For the second consecutive year, Luke H. qualified for the AIME.
Ohio Math League
GHS finished a respectable 26th place in School Rankings, and Luke H. finished tied for 12th in the Individual scores. (Final 21-22 Results)
Looking at the participating schools, Granville is an outlier of sorts as the rankings are filled with high-enrollment public schools and elite private schools, but no public schools of Granville’s size.
U of C Math Bowl
1st Place Winner (Tied) in Level 1 (Calculus) Division with Perfect Score of 70
The University of Cincinnati Math Bowl was held virtually in 21-22, and so the GHS Math Team participated for the first time. A GMS Team (MathCounts) was also formed to compete.
The GHS Math Team of Andrew H., Luke H., Maggie G, and Antony G. got a perfect score of 70 out of 70 in the highest division, Level 1 (Calculus). The contest was unlike any that we had done before — 7 problems in 90 minutes that required written proofs for each problem.
The GMS Math Team of Owen W., JV K., Jack H., Kevin G, and Yingling Y. participated in the second highest division, Level 2 (Algebra II and Geometry). This team of 7th and 8th graders scored a respectable 42 out of 70 points for an “Excellent” rating. This was even more remarkable considering that most of their competition was high school 9th and 10th graders.
Arete Lab’s Math Madness
Because of the Math Team’s busy fall schedule (OCTM, AMC, etc.), we participated in Math Madness’s “Rerun” held in the spring (instead of the more-popular fall version).
In a field containing large public schools and elite private schools, Granville won its first round match, but lost in the second round. (Final Bracket Results)
We participated in a Math Madness contest nearly every week from mid-February to April. This was a great opportunity to face schools around the country.
Looking Ahead
For 22-23, the GHS Math Team looks to build upon our success and participate in even more contests as we face the brightest and best around the country. We are looking closely at adding the Rocket City League in 22-23 (Details).
