GHS Math Team – 2022-23 Year in Review
In its third year, the GHS Math Team built on its great results from the previous season to move up in the rankings against the top schools in the state and nation!

OCTM Contest
Two OHMIO Qualifiers for Second Straight Year
The GHS Math Team had Luke H. and Andrew H. both finish in the top 100 in the state, enabling them to qualify for the prestigious OHMIO (Ohio HS Math Invitational Olympiad) contest held on November 5, 2022 at Capital University. Luke H. placed 3rd in the Individual round and 6th Overall.
Luke H. went on to participate in the Ohio ARML Team and was a valuable member of the team that competed in Division A, the highest division with the toughest teams in the nation. The Ohio Team finished 25th of 115 teams. (Results Summary, Complete Results)
AMC 10/12
GHS Had Two AIME Qualifiers!
For the third consecutive year, junior Luke H. qualified for the AIME. Plus, Granville High School had a second qualifier, Andrew H.!
Although no records are available, this was probably the first time in GHS history that we had TWO AIME qualifiers in the same year.

Ohio Math League
GHS finished an excellent 14th place in School Rankings (no divisions based on school size), and Luke H. finished 2nd in the Individual scores and Andrew H. finished 25th. (Final 22-23 Results)
Looking at the participating schools, Granville is an outlier of sorts as the rankings are filled with high-enrollment public schools and elite private schools. The only comparable public school to Granville in terms of size is the math powerhouse Revere High School.
U of C Math Bowl
2nd Straight Year for “Superior” (highest) Ranking with Score of 65/70
For the second straight year, the GHS Math Team participated virtually in the University of Cincinnati Math Bowl (this year, it was held both in-person and online).
The GHS Math Team of Owen W., Luke H., Jack H, and Brady M. got a score of 65 of 70 in the highest division, Level 1 (Calculus). The contest is unusual from our other contests because it consists of 7 problems in 90 minutes that require written proofs for each problem. Although this score did not equal the perfect score of 70/70 obtained in 2022, it still qualified for the highest grade of “Superior”!
The GMS Math Team of Chyler K, Elina K, Harrison M., Kevin G., and Yingling Y. participated in the second highest division, Level 2 (Algebra II and Geometry). This team of 8th and 9th graders scored a great 51 out of 70 points for an “Excellent” rating, which was higher than last year’s GMS team score of 45/70. This was even more remarkable considering that most of their competition was high school 9th and 10th graders.
Arete Lab’s Math Madness
GHS Goes Undefeated at 10-0
Because of the Math Team’s busy fall schedule (OCTM, AMC, etc.), we participated in Math Madness’s “Rerun” held in the spring (instead of the more-popular fall version). Since the number of participating schools was not enough to form a true tournament like in previous years, each week was a round-robin contest with a random school.
In a field containing large public schools and elite private schools, the GHS Math Team ran the gauntlet and went undefeated at 10-0.

Rocket City Math League
Finished 9th in the nation from 100+ teams
In a field of 153 teams from around the world (but mostly from the U.S.), the GHS Math Team finished 9th, just behind Revere HS at 8th. Once again, GHS finished ahead of some major math & science schools and large public schools.
The GMS team consisting only of 7th and 8th graders (9th graders were allowed on MS team, but they joined the GHS team instead) finished a respectable 12th place out of 21 schools.

Purple Comet
Finished 4th in State (out of 23 teams)
In our first time participating in the Purple Comet math contest, the GHS Math Team finished 4th in Ohio in the High School 1-1200 Enrollment Division with 14 out of 30 correct. Columbus Academy won 1st place with 17 out of 30 correct. (Official Results)
Looking Ahead
For 23-24, the GHS Math Team looks to build upon our success and participate in even more contests as we face the brightest and best around the country. We will continue to look for new competitions and challenges locally and online!
